The home located here was the site where a sinkhole opened up on February 28, 2013 swallowing Jeff Bush, 37, as he was sleeping in his bed.  The sinkhole also swallowed most of the contents of his room as Bush screamed for help.  His brother Jeremy tried unsuccessfully to save him but became trapped and had to be rescued by fire department personnel.  The sinkhole was originally about 30 feet wide and 20 feet deep.

The house was torn down and the sinkhole filled in with gravel.  Both houses on each side of the Bush residence were condemned.   Ten days after the incident, Jeremy Bush visits the site of their former home regularly.  He said that when he jumped into the sinkhole to save his brother that it was no deeper than the top of his head.  There was no water in the hole as he tried to dig to get his brother (the sides probably collapsed on the underground cave system permanently interning Jeff Bush's body).  Later the sinkhole became about 60 feet deep according to engineers at the site.  Jeremy also said that the house had been inspected about 5 months prior to the death of his brother, and they found no signs of the impending disaster.

Jeremy reminisced about the bedroom that was lost to the sinkhole.  It was his two-year old daughter's room until they recently moved her to another  room when Jeff Bush moved in.  Although he was quite distressed over the loss of his brother, he was very thankful his daughter was not in the room the night of February 28.  Asked if there were any plans to attempt to locate his brother, Bush said the only hope they had now was if he washed through the underground cave system into the Alafia River about 15 miles away.
