Karakorum was chosen by Genghis and Ögödei Khans as the center of his empire.  It was later destroyed by the invading Chinese.  The Erdene Zuu Monastery now located here was built on top of the ancient city.  The Soviets also discovered Ögödei’s palace and a 12th or 13th century Buddhist shrine.   The precise location of these needs to be found.

Description

Karakorum

Karakorum (Classical Mongolian: ᠬᠠᠷᠠᠬᠣᠷᠣᠮ Qara Qorum, Khalkha Mongolian: Хархорум Kharkhorum) was the capital of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, and of the Northern Yuan in the 14-15th century. Its ruins lie in the northwestern corner of the Övörkhangai Province of Mongolia, near today's town of Kharkhorin, and adjacent to the Erdene Zuu monastery. They are part of the upper part of the World Heritage Site Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape.
