On May 5th, 2008, Irina Yarmolenko was found murdered here along the Catawba River.  Her car had been pushed down the slope and her body, which was found next to the car, had ligature marks indicating strangulation.  Mark Carver, whose DNA was found on the car, was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to life in prison.  He and his cousin were fishing near where the car and body were found (the cousin died before he came to trial).
