The Gate of China is also the site of immense brutality during the Japanese assault of the city during the battle and massacre of Nanking.  Iris Chang describes prisoners being bayoneted by the Japanese on the gate to practice their fighting techniques.

Gate of China, Nanjing

The Gate of China in Nanjing (simplified Chinese: 中华门; traditional Chinese: 中華門; pinyin: Zhōnghuámén), was a gate and defensive complex on the city wall of Nanjing, China. It was the southern gate of Nanjing city. It is a renowned ancient city gate in China and the city gate with the most complex structure in the world.
