It is believed that Drakes Bay here is the most likely place that Sir Francis Drake came ashore in 1579 to claim what would later become California (Nova Albion) for the British Crown.  There were pieces of porcelain found here that could have been left by Drake but in fact, the precise location of where he landed is unknown.

Description

Francis Drake

Sir Francis Drake, Vice Admiral (1540 – 27 January 1596) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era. Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world, from 1577 to 1580.
