The obelisk is to the left of St. Peter's Basilica

The obelisk was part of Nero's circus circa 37 AD and was moved from the outer edge of St. Peter's Square to the center in 1586.  It is the site of the first Christians being thrown to the lions in 65 AD.

Saint Peter's Square

Saint Peter's Square (Italian: Piazza San Pietro, Latin: Forum Sancti Petri, pronounced [ˌpi̯aʦa san ˈpi̯ɛːtɾo]) is a massive plaza located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, the papal enclave surrounded by Rome, directly west of the neighborhood or rione of Borgo.
