James Carleton was sent from California to here in order to investigate the Mountain Meadows massacre.  He concluded that the Paiute Indian role in the massacre was minimal and that the deed was done by local Mormons.

James Henry Carleton

James Henry Carleton (December 27, 1814 – January 7, 1873) was an officer in the U. S. Army and a general in the Union army during the American Civil War. Carleton is best known as an Indian fighter in the southwestern United States.
