Colonel Daniel Newnan led 117 Georgia volunteers into Florida. On September 27, 1812, they ran into 75 Seminoles led by King Payne here. After the battle began, the Indians were reinforced by blacks and other Indians from the surrounding area. Newman and his men built a brestwork which kept the Indians away. On Oct. 4, the Georgians decided to attempt a retreat at night and eventually escaped but came close to being wiped out.
