The outcrop here is the site where Walter and Luis Alvarez discovered that the ash layer at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary was formed by a meteorite impact 66 million years ago.

Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event

The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event occurred approximately 66 million years ago (Ma) at the end of the Maastrichtian age of the Cretaceous period. It was an intense, global mass extinction of animals and plants, most notably dinosaurs, taking place in a geologically short period of time.
