Comments

After the whaleship Essex sank on Nov. 26, 1820, the crew eventually reached land here. They could find little to eat or drink so they moved on. There was a cave found years later with 6 people in it that had died of dehydration probably from another shipwreck. The crew of the Essex landed on north beach.

Description

Essex (whaleship)

The Essex was an American whaleship from Nantucket, Massachusetts. The ship, captained by George Pollard, Jr., was widely known for being attacked and sunk by a sperm whale in the southern Pacific Ocean in 1820 – an incident that served as inspiration for Herman Melville's 1851 novel, Moby-Dick.
