Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of Christian Science (1879), a religion that rejects medicine and hygiene and relies on spiritual healing instead. Having been sickly most of her life she spent much of her time searching for what she thought would be beneficial to her own state of health and eventually established a church which emphasized healing through prayer. In 1898, she founded the Christian Science Publishing Society which published the daily newspaper The Christian Science Monitor, a seven time Pulitzer Prize winning publication. She also founded the monthly magazine Christian Science Journal, the weekly periodical Christian Science Sentinel, and the Herald of Christian Science which is published in many languages.
