The John Harvard Monument was sculpted in 1884 by Daniel Chester French (he is also noted for sculpting the Lincoln Memorial statue). No one knows what Harvard looked like at the time so a student was chosen by French to represent John Harvard. In addition, the College (now university) was established by the Massachusetts Bay Colony, not by John Harvard. John Harvard was a major contributor to the College, and it was later named for him. In addition, the statue says that the College was founded in 1638, but it was actually founded in 1636. Consequently, students refer to the monument as the “statue of three lies”. 6/28/2012 12:03:19 PM
