Sunken Gardens is one of Florida’s oldest tourist attractions and is still open to the public. It was originally owned by George Turner Sr. In 1903, he drained the small lake on his private property to create a sunken garden. He planted many tropical and subtropical fruit trees eventually opening a produce stand and nursery. Shoppers would pay five cents to walk through the tropical garden he created, and soon he was able to increase the entrance fee to twenty five cents. The city of St. Petersburg purchased Sunken Gardens in 1999. In 2002, the building, which was built in 1926, was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
