Tiananmen Square

In Central Beijing sits one of the world’s largest city squares, Tiananmen Square.

The name of this world-renowned square means gate of heavenly peace in Chinese. The square is most noted as the site of a pro democracy protest on June 4, 1989 that ended in several hundred deaths. The Chinese government declared martial law and arrested many dissidents.

Within the square is the Mao Zedong’s Mausoleum and the Monument to the People’s Heroes which was erected in honor of the martyrs of China’s revolutionary struggles over the past two centuries. Bordering the square on the north side is the Tiananmen gate, and on the south side is the Zhengyangmen also known as the Qianmen gate. The national museum of China is located on the east side of the square and the west side is lined with trees. The square is full of cultural interests and sites, and can be accessed by tourists via city bus.
