Description

Kollam temple fire

On 10 April 2016 before 03:30 IST (22:00 UTC on April 9) the Puttingal Temple in Paravur, Kollam, India, experienced an explosion and fire. As a result, 110 people were killed and more than 350 were injured, including some with severe burns, after firework celebrations went awry. Local reports blame the explosion and fire on firecrackers that were being used in a celebration.[2][3] The temple did not have permission from Kerala government authorities to conduct a "competitive fireworks display."[4] About 15,000 pilgrims were visiting the temple to mark local Hindu celebrations, for the last day of a seven-day festival of goddess Bhadrakali.[5]
