Tectonized Permian (?) tonalite and greenstone in the combined Heavens Hate and Rapid River Fault Zones

View on map:45.631496°N 116.284876°W

Comments

The Heavens Gate and Rapid River faults come together and are exposed here.  The outcrop shows tectonized tonalite (light colored at the bottom of the outcrop) and greeenstone (darker toward the top) which are part of the basement in the region.  The greenstone and tonalites deformed differently within the fault zone.  The tonalites display a brittle-ductile steeply dipping fabric whereas the greenstone displays shallow dipping mylonitic fabric that parallels the contact between the two units.  Stop 4 of Schmidt et al.

Description

Greenstone is a name given to several different types of minerals and rocks.
