The battle was fought between the Northern Cheyenne and the U.S. Cavalry in 1878 after the Cheyenne attempted to relocate from a reservation near Fort El Reno to their home in Montana.  The commander of the cavalry was Lt. Colonel William H. Lewis who was killed during the fight.  Chiefs Dull Knife and Little Wolf led the 92 warriors who accompanied 120 women and 141 children.  Defensive positions of the Cheyenne can be found in the area.

Northern Cheyenne Exodus

The Northern Cheyenne Exodus, also known as Dull Knife's Raid, the Cheyenne War,[2] or the Cheyenne Campaign,[3] was the attempt of the Northern Cheyenne to return to the north, after being placed on the Southern Cheyenne reservation in the Indian Territory, and the United States Army operations to stop them. The period lasted from 1878 to 1879.[4][5]
