Tar sands at Turkey Creek Gap

View on map:39.635133°N 105.168433°W

Comments

At the top of the Late Cretaceous Dakota Formation here are tar sands (they have lost their lighter components).  The tar was once an oil deposit deep underground and gives observers a chance to see how oil existed underground in the pores of the sandstone (porosity).   Stop 6 of Abbot and Noe.
