Catoctin Formation Greenstone from metamorphosed columnar jointed basalt

View on map:38.027980°N 78.857800°W

Comments

The outcrop is of basalt with columnar jointing that has been metamorphosed into a "chlorite- and epidote-rich metabasalt" and greenstone of the Catoctin Formation which is Neoproterozoic.  Columnar jointing may still exist in the basalts or they could be rock due to rock cleavage during metamorphism.  Stop 2 of Carter et al.
