Mkwawa University College of Education
The Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) is a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam in Iringa, Tanzania.[1] The College was established in 2005 following the upgrading of the former Mkwawa High School in response to the growing demand for teachers in the country. Since its establishment in 2005, MUCE has achieved various remarkable milestones, including the increase in students’ enrolment, number of both academic and administrative staff along with their notable development to Master’s and PhD levels. Moreover, the College has undergone massive infrastructural development and established various short-term courses and one postgraduate programmes namely Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). More efforts are under way to establish various postgraduate programmes at Master’s level for their effective implementation from the academic year 2016/2017. Within ten years of its operation, the College had an overall mandate for: (i) advancing knowledge and creativity, (ii) diffusion and extension of arts, science and technology and learning, and (iii) provision of higher education, research and knowledge exchange and nurturing the society for its intellectual, aesthetic, social and moral growth. In order to cope with the emerging opportunities and challenges, the College has just adopted a new Five-Year Rolling Strategic Plan (2015/16-2019/20), which was approved by the College Governing Board on 5 August 2015. The College vision is “to become a centre of excellence in producing innovative and inspired teachers and leaders by providing integrated quality education’’. This vision is supported by the mission “to deliver quality teaching, research and public services in education geared at transforming the society”. In order to achieve the available vision, mission and mandate, the College through its new RSP has adopted the following seven rolling strategic objectives: (i) To improve innovative teaching and learning technologies in education programmes (ii) To offer comprehensive educational programmes for all levels from early childhood up to tertiary and teacher professional development (iii) To improve and diversify academic and professional programs (iv) To enhance research and delivery of public services (v) To enhance human resource capacity and wellbeing (vi) To enhance institutional governance and visibility of College programmes (vii) To improve physical facilities and infrastructure
