The 2009 Fiji earthquake occurred on November 9, 2009 at 22:44 local time (10:44 UTC) in Fiji. The epicenter was situated between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, about 100 km from Suva. With a depth of 585.1 km and magnitude of Mw 7.3,[2] this earthquake occurred within the Pacific Plate which is subducting into the deeper mantle at the Tonga Trench.[3] No strong damage was expected because of the depth of the earthquake.[4]
