The Allende meteorite, which fell near Allende, Mexico on February 8, 1969, is the oldest rock ever dated at 4.567 billion years old and is believed to represent the date of the formation of the solar system. The meteorite represents a class of meteorites called carbonaceous chondrites which are relatively rich in elements like carbon that would burn away under the extreme conditions of solar system formation. Therefore, scientists believe the meteorite formed just prior to the formation of our solar system. 6/22/2012 1:17:37 PM
