Asa Gray was the most well renowned American botanist of the 19th century. He was influenced by Darwin and published many works such as Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States, from England to Wisconsin and South to Ohio and Pennsylvania inclusive, and also The Flora of North America, and Elements of Botany. Gray was a professor of natural history at Harvard University from 1842 to 1873. In 1859, he was elected as a foreign member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Gray donated his extraordinary and extensive collection of books and plant samples to Harvard University.
Asa Gray (November 18, 1810 – January 30, 1888) is considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century.
