The Ohio Black Shale is rich in carbon (up to 8 wt. %) which is partly responsible for its color and makes it a primary natural gas source.  Since 1892 when the natural gas was discovered, the shale has produce about 300 million cubic feet of gas.

The New Albany Shale is an organic-rich geologic formation of Devonian and Mississippian age in the Illinois Basin of the United States. It is a major source of hydrocarbons.
