Miami University (also referred to as Miami of Ohio or simply Miami) is a public research university located on a 2,138-acre campus in Oxford, Ohio, 35 miles north of Cincinnati. Founded in 1809, although classes were not held until 1824, Miami University is the 10th oldest public university and 32nd oldest higher education institution in the United States.[citation needed] The university also has regional campuses in Hamilton, Middletown and West Chester, as well as the Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. Miami University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with a high research activity.[6][7] It is affiliated to the University System of Ohio.
