It is not known precisely where Ponce fought the Calusa Indians but he no doubt landed near here in Charlotte Harbor.  After he was shot with a poison arrow, his 200 men took him back to Havana, Cuba where he died a few days later.

Juan Ponce de León

Juan Ponce de León (/ˈpɒns də ˈliən/[2] Spanish pronunciation: [ˈponθe ðe leˈon]; 1474 – July 1521)[3] was a Spanish explorer and conquistador. He became the first Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of the Spanish crown. He led the first European expedition to Florida, which he named. He is associated with the legend of the Fountain of Youth, reputed to be in Florida.
