Buckingham Palace is the residence of Great Britain’s royal monarch. It also presently serves as Queen Elizabeth II’s place of work and diplomatic entertaining.
The palace was originally built in 1705 for the Duke of Buckingham, and has since been occupied by Queen Charlotte, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth II. The palace’s east wing is the site of the famous balcony from which the royal family gathers to greet the public on special occasions. The forty acre palace garden is the largest garden in London. With its tennis court and lake it makes a perfect spot for the Queen’s garden parties and jubilees. The famous Changing of the Guard takes place in the Forecourt of the palace and is a major tourist attraction for those visiting London. Tourists are also admitted into the state rooms of the palace during the months of August and September.
