Garuda Indonesia Flight 421

Garuda Indonesia Flight 421 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia covering about 625 kilometers, from Ampenan to Yogyakarta. On January 16, 2002, the Boeing 737-300 aircraft experienced a flameout in both of its CFM International CFM56 engines about 90 seconds after entering a thunderstorm with heavy rain and hail after the BLORA point. The crew tried, but failed, to restart the engines three times. They then tried to start the auxiliary power unit which failed as well. The Co-Pilot tried to transmit a Mayday, but failed. Then, the aircraft disappeared from the Radar and Jogja Tower asked the Pelita Air plane to take a holding above the Solo and its region. As the aircraft descended below the overcast layer of clouds at approximately 8,000' AGL, the pilots saw the Bengawan Solo River and decided to attempt a ditching with the flaps and gear retracted. When the aircraft made an emergency landing, the plane hit a rock in the river and underwent sudden decompression[clarification needed] that caused one flight attendant to be sucked away from the plane. Additionally, some passengers and flight attendants received minor injuries. After the emergency landing, the Pilot, Capt. Abdul Razak contacted the Jogja Tower, and said that they had made an emergency landing on Bengawan Solo. The evacuation team arrived not too much longer after incident and all the passengers were evacuated safely. The aircraft was written-off as a total loss.
