Governor Charles Bent had been at his new job for only about four months having been appointed when General Kearny took control of New Mexico during the Mexican American War.  He decided to travel from Santa Fe to his home in Taos to see his wife and children.  But once he reached there, the Taos Pueblo Indians along with several Mexicans set upon him, angry about arrests of friends and the presence of the US in their territory.  They stormed his house and killed him with arrows on January 15, 1847.
