Comments

In the autumn of 1861 as they did every autumn, Fort Fauntleroy (would become Fort Wingate) offered food to hungry Navajos.  The occasion became festive through the years and a horse race was one of the last events on this day.  The Navajo horse lost the race to a US Army horse but the Navajo felt that their horse had the bridle cut.  That night after drinking a mob of angry Navajo came back to the fort demanding the items they had lost on the horse race bets.  Gun fire opened up and nearly 20 Navajo died.  Nothing ever came of an inquiry.
