Approximately 1,500 artworks from the 1930s were discovered in spring 2011 by German tax authorities in a rented apartment in Schwabing, Munich. The cache included works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Mattise, Marc Chagall, and others. On 3 November 2013, the magazine Focus reported the discovery, stating that of the estimated 1,500 pieces, at least 200 are documented as having been lost since the Nazi era.
