Eighty men of the expedition shipwrecked near here and tried to survive.  They relied on eating the dead until there was only one man left who was later taken as a slave of local Indians and eventually killed.

Narváez expedition

The Narváez expedition was a Spanish attempt during the years 1527–1528 to colonize Spanish Florida. It was led by Pánfilo de Narváez, who was appointed to rule as adelantado.
