The Coronado expedition reached near the furthest extension of their exploration here near Hutchinson, KS.  Quivara was a place they heard was rich in gold but turned out to be a fabrication.  The precise location is said by Hoig to be on the Arkansas River where Cow Creek and the Little Arkansas River join.  The actual location needs to be found  because the Little Arkansas River meets the Arkansas River in Witchta.

Description

Francisco Vásquez de Coronado

Francisco Vázquez de Coronado y Luján (1510 – 22 September 1554) was a Spanish conquistador, who visited New Mexico and other parts of what are now the southwestern United States between 1540 and 1542. Coronado had hoped to conquer the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. His name is often Anglicized as Vasquez de Coronado. Sometimes the name even appears in a Spanish-English hybridization of Vásquez de Coronado, as in the title for this article.
