Description

Ashland Gristmill and Dam

The Ashland Gristmill and Dam are a historic former industrial facility in the heart of Ashland, New Hampshire. The dam, originally a wooden construction, is a concrete structured located on the Squam River, where Main Street (New Hampshire Route 132) crosses the river. It is 180' long, 14' high, and has a 50' spillway. The mill building located at the northeast corner of Main Street and Daniel Webster Highway was built in 1903 on the site of a gristmill that was destroyed by fire. It has a massive timber frame, whose most prominent feature is a central tower from which wings balloon out. Its basement still houses the turbine and controlling hardware, although these are no longer operational.
