Fly in on a float plane, fish all day, have lunch at a nice rustic lodge, and observe the bears watching you take their fish at Big River Lake, AK.

The flight from Anchorage to Big River Lake is less than one hour. The float plane takes you right up to the dock of a rustic lodge where a fine lunch awaits. After vitals, it’s into the boats for fly fishing and bear watching. The sockeye salmon (silver and coho salmon come later in the summer) run several creeks that flow into the lake. Most catch their three-fish limit fairly quickly (you can continue to fish for sockeye as long as you throw back those over the limit).
Where the fresh water streams hit the lake, crystal clear waters abound displaying plentiful schools of salmon swimming in the shallows. These areas make exceptional fishing spots for the bears as they regularly pace the shores of the lake. They seem to know that fish are being caught and frequently approach the anglers’ boats.
