It reads: "In the memory of Capt. George Payne age 32 years a native of Cornwall Conn also of D. Whidden both were killed by a party of Seminole Indians on the evening of July 17, 1849. Here are the might of the fallen."

The location here is the grave (or monument) to Capt. George Payne and Dempsey Whidden who were attacked and killed by five Seminole warriors near here on July 17, 1849.

Description

Paynes Creek Historic State Park is a Florida State Park located on Lake Branch Road one-half mile southeast of Bowling Green, Florida. On November 21, 1978, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, under the title of Payne's Creek Massacre-Fort Chokonikla Site (also known as "site of Chokonikla blockhouse and bridge" or "Military cemetery").
