Fisherman’s Wharf about 1891

Fisherman’s Wharf is a popular tourist attraction that includes such places as Ghirardelli Square, Pier 39, seals along the bay at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, Cannery Shopping Center, a World War II submarine the USS Pampanito, and restaurants galore including the well-known floating Forbes Island restaurant. Cablecars access the area.

The area was named after Italian fisherman that were drawn to the gold rush in 1849. They did not strike it rich with gold mines but they did mine the sea, particularly the Dungeness Crab, and sold their catch at and around Fisherman’s Wharf.
