Nonesuch shale potholes

These are classic geologic potholes formed when pebbles or rocks get caught up in swirling water of a river or creek.  The pebbles abrade the underlying rock making holes which become deeper with time.  Some of the potholes here are over seven feet deep (pebbles now in the holes can make them look much shallower).  By the way, the Precambrian Nonsuch shale that contains the potholes is rich in carbon and probably is the source of a small amount of oil discovered while prospecting for copper in the area.  If true, this would make the oil the oldest found on the planet.
