The University of Central Florida (UCF), which is located in Orlando and was established in 1963, is part of the Florida State University System.

The nation’s second largest university by enrollment with 58,698 students in 2011 has twelve colleges and offers over 210 different degrees. It consists of twelve satellite campuses throughout the state. UCF is Florida’s space-grant university with one in each of the country’s 50 states. As a result, UCF has been a contributor to research in such diverse fields as optics, modeling and simulation, engineering, computer science, digital media, and other areas that relate to space exploration.

UCF’s athletic team, the Knights, is soon to become an all sports member of the Big East in the 2013-2014 season. Their mascot, Knightro, appears at sporting events on horseback and often rides around campus in his car called chariot II, which was custom designed and built by the students in the engineering department on campus.

The admittance rate in the Fall of 2011 was 41% with 34% of those admitted being in the top ten percent of their high school class and 72% being in the top quarter. The Carnegie Foundation for The Advancement of Teaching rated UCF as a “selective” university. UCF is ranked 2nd in Florida and 34th in the nation based on the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled.
