The basalts originally formed here under rifting conditions within the Midcontinent Rift which extended for nearly 1,000 miles through the central part of North American craton in the Precambiran much the same way the East African Rift is behaving today.  The basalts are exposed here at the falls along with younger Precambrian sandstones.  They are in contact along a normal fault that was part of the graben structure that existed during rifting of the Midcontinent Rift about 1 billion years ago.
