The Roman Catholic Church believes that the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous here at Lourdes.  The water from the spring water flowing from the site is said by the Church to be related to miracles.  

Lourdes apparitions

The Marian Apparitions at Lourdes were reported in 1858 by Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old miller's daughter from the town of Lourdes in southern France.
