The rapids on the North Anna River represent the Fall Zone where the Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain geologic provinces. "Most Atlantic-draining streams have significant knick zones as they transit from the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain geologic provinces; these rapids formed barriers to upstream navigation".
