Among the inhabitants of the region, the remains of the fort baths were already known before the beginning of scientific research and were referred to as "heathen church". At least since the end of the 18th century, the Roman origin of this building remains secured. First archaeological excavations at Feldbergkastell took place shortly after the middle of the 19th century, systematic scientific investigations followed from 1892, first by the Reichs-Limeskommission , later by the Saalburgmuseum .
