Comments

Billy Lyons was murdered by "Stagger Lee" Shelton at the corner of Morgan and Eleventh Streets in St. Louis, MO in 1895.  Unfortunately, the two streets do not converge today but the site has been extrapolated to where they would have converged in 1895.  The site of the murder needs to be verified.

Description

Lee Shelton (March 16, 1865 - March 11, 1912) was a black carriage driver and pimp convicted of murdering William "Billy" Lyons on Christmas night, 1895 in St. Louis, Missouri.[2] The crime was immortalized in a popular song that has been recorded by numerous artists. Stagger Lee (also "Stackalee," "Stackolee" and "Stagolee") ultimately becomes a folk figure of the trickster type as numerous legends accumulated around him.
