On 30 October 2022, at 6:40 pm,[4]Julto Pul,[2] a 143-year-old suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, India, which crossed the Machchhu River, collapsed.[5][6] Hundreds were on the bridge at the time; at least 68 people died, and as many as 500 others are missing.[7][2][8][verification needed] Dozens of people were critically injured.[9] The accident occurred just four days after the bridge was reopened following repairs.[10] The bridge had been closed for two years before the incident and was reopened after renovation on 26 October on the occasion of Gujarati New Year. The chief officer of the municipality, (who had given the contract for repairs after 2001 earthquake) stated that the private firm responsible for the renovations, "threw the bridge open to visitors without notifying us and therefore, we couldn’t get a safety audit of the bridge conducted,"[4]
