The Fort Dodge gypsum is considered the purest gypsum on earth. Gypsum is a mineral (calcium sulfate) mined in the region since the 1850s. The outcrop here is a section that has not been mined. Gypsum typical forms from evaporation of ocean water in an isolated basin.
