The well was located here by Edwin L. Drake in 1859 because it was close to a nearby oil seep. It was 69 feet deep and the first well bored in the world. It came very close to missing the oil reservoir below. The well actually produced oil for more than two years at about 20 barrels a day.

The Pennsylvania oil rush was a boom in petroleum production which occurred in northwestern Pennsylvania from 1859 to the early 1870s. It was the first oil boom in the United States.
